I'm a mom to three kids, two of whom happen to have special needs. We don't like to think of ourselves as a "special needs family." We like to think of ourselves as a family who happens to have special needs - much in the same way that we like to think of ourselves as a family that likes to travel and hike and eat good food. 

But even though that's our frame of reference, having children with medical and physical needs is a very real part of our lives. Some days it takes up a lot of head and heart space; other days it's something we hardly think about. 

You can choose to muddle through life willy nilly, or you can try to make everyday living an art form. I choose the latter, for all parts of my life -- even the sometimes hard parts. 

Joan Didion once said, “I write to find out what I am thinking, what I am looking at, what I see and what it means.” I write about special needs for exactly that reason.
